The 31st Wines from Spain Annual Tasting will be held at London’s Sky Garden in September 2020
62 leading importers and exporters will present their Spanish wine portfolios to the UK trade and press, including the latest releases and vintages available on the market. A selection of around 1,000 wines from 300 wineries from across Spain’s 71 D.O.s will be available to explore under one roof.
Fernando Muñoz, Director at Wines from Spain, comments: ‘Spain’s unique and diverse landscape is home to one of the widest ranges of grape varieties and styles in the wine world. With high-calibre raw material at their fingertips, Spanish winemakers combine their spirit of innovation with a respect for winemaking heritage to push new boundaries, while all the time building on Spain’s rich traditions’.
He adds: ‘The revival of near-extinct indigenous grape varieties, the tireless exploration of local landscapes, the ongoing study of the influence of microclimate and elevation, and the development of organic and sustainable winemaking practices – these are all major factors putting Spain at the forefront of winemaking today. We are very pleased to highlight these trends in our tasting features this year and invite visitors to look at Spanish wines from a fresh perspective.’
From Mountain to Coast
Two self-pour tastings will showcase Spanish wines made in the mountains and coastal regions of Spain.
- Spanish Altitude: a line-up of wines made in high-elevation locations across Spain
- By the Sea: a selection of Spanish wines made in coastal regions
Freshness & Elegance: focus on D.O. Ribera del Duero
11am-11.30am & 3-3.30pm
Altitude combines with a complex patchwork of soils and the influence of the Duero River to create the intensity and fruit purity that are hallmarks of Ribera del Duero’s wines. Join Agustín Alonso, Technical Director at Ribera del Duero’s Consejo Regulador, for a tasting of six Ribera del Duero wines specially selected to highlight the freshness and elegance of one of Spain’s most well-known regions.
Indigenous Revival: focus on D.O. Valencia
12-12.30pm & 4pm-4.30pm
D.O. Valencia epitomises the diversity of Spain’s landscape, from the warm, sun-drenched Mediterranean coast to the cool-climate elevations (up to 1,200m above sea level) where nights remain chilly year round. That diverse topography is equally matched by a distinctive range of local grape varieties. Join Sarah Jane Evans MW for a tasting of six D.O. Valencia wines to learn how indigenous varietals such as Verdil, Mandó and Forcallá are being revived to produce exciting modern wines brimming with local character.
